1. How might reading Philemon as a personal letter change our approach to its message? Have you ever received or written a letter that impacted your life or encouraged you in a significant way?

2. Paul calls Onesimus his “child” and “very heart.” How does our relationship with Christ challenge us to view and treat others who have wronged us, especially those who are also in the faith?

3. Paul offers to “charge” any debts of Onesimus to his own account. How does this act of self-sacrifice and mediation reflect Christ’s work on our behalf? In what practical ways can we offer forgiveness and seek reconciliation in our own relationships?

4. Paul expresses confidence in Philemon’s ability to go beyond what is expected. What are some practical ways we can show confidence in others’ spiritual growth and transformation, especially in challenging situations?

5. Paul’s letter encourages reconciliation within the church body. Why do you think reconciliation is so vital in the church, and what obstacles often stand in the way? How can we overcome these obstacles?

6. Paul’s confidence in the “grace of the Lord Jesus Christ” is unwavering, despite the complexities of church relationships. How can we practically love and serve the church, especially when church life becomes messy or difficult?

7. The gospel is costly, but obedience is worth it. How can you this week live out the gospel, bringing the hope of reconciliation and truth to the world?

8. Paul’s letter is filled with words of encouragement and guidance for Philemon. Who might you encourage in the faith this week through a letter, message, or call, and what would you want to say?
