Pastor Laurie Stuck

Matthew 18:21-35

This passage addresses two things:

  • God's forgiveness to sinners who repent of their sin and become believers in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior....and
  • the forgiveness forgiven believers give to brothers and sisters in Christ in the church.

1.  Pastor Laurie asked: "What is it within us that we have a hard time forgiving others when God has forgiven us?" What do you think?

2.  We learned that Jesus was not only speaking about forgiving one another, but Christian character as well.  Why is important to deal with forgiveness before worship?  Pragmatically, in the everyday world, what does that look like in the weekly life of a believer?

3.  How does the totality of God's forgiveness affect you? How does it encourage you? Psalm 103:1-5, specifically verse 3, encourages believers in this area.

4.  How did the parable come "to life" through today's message? In verse 25, Pastor Laurie discussed where people go as punishment for sin.  Who in your life needs to hear the compassionate truth that those who do not believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior will go to hell for their sin?

5.  What does unforgiveness in the church do, left unchecked?

6.  "The heart of the human problem has always been the human problem of the heart." (Jeremiah 17:9) If we are believers in Christ, then we are not to keep forgiveness to ourselves.  Read: Proverbs 17:9, Matthew 6:14-15, and 1 John 1:9.  Who needs forgiveness from you? Pray for each other in this area.
