1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

"Rejoice Always" (v. 16)

  1. Why does Paul command continual joy?
  2. What’s the difference between biblical joy and shallow optimism?
  3. Where in your life right now do you struggle to rejoice?

"Pray Without Ceasing" (v. 17)

  1. How does God’s sovereign control over all things encourage prayer rather than discourage it?
  2. What do you think “unceasing prayer” looks like in daily life? Share examples of how an ongoing posture of dependence changes your day.
  3. Which aspects of your life tend to be prayerless?

"Give Thanks in All Circumstances" (v. 18a)

  1. Paul says to give thanks in all circumstances, not necessarily for all circumstances. How does this distinction matter, especially when life is hard?
  2. What is one difficult situation in which you need the Spirit’s help to respond with gratitude?

“For This Is the Will of God in Christ Jesus for You” (v. 18b)

  1. Why do you think Paul connects these commands to “the will of God”?
  2. How do these three marks—joy, prayer, thanksgiving—reflect evidence of the Spirit’s work rather than self-generated effort?
  3. What is one practical step you can take this week to rehearse these commands in light of the gospel?
