Matthew 5:17-20

1. Today we covered the question, “What is Jesus’ view of the Bible?” Why is this question such a foundational question to answer for the Christian?

2. Looking at Matthew 5:17 & also John 10:35, we see that Jesus believes that the Scriptures cannot be nullified or broken. What happens when a person begins to believe that certain parts of Scripture are irrelevant, outdated, or untrustworthy?

3. Pastor Nate explained 3 ways that Jesus fulfills the Scriptures: in the moral law by His perfect righteousness, in the sacrificial system by His once & for all atoning sacrifice on the cross, & the messianic prophecies by the specifics of His life. Unpack each of these ways of fulfillment & why each is necessary for us to have confidence in Jesus.

4. Another major point from Sunday’s message was that Jesus is central to the Scriptures. Look at Luke 24:25-27, 44-47; John 5:39-40. How does understanding the centrality of Jesus for the whole Bible encourage us to study the whole Bible?

5. Looking at Matthew 5:18, we see that Jesus is absolutely confident that every detail of the Scriptures will be accomplished. This is seen throughout the gospels as Jesus quotes Scripture, defends with Scripture, & takes the historical events of Scripture at face value. What does it look like for us to live as people who are absolutely confident that the details of the Bible will be accomplished?

6. In Matthew 5:19, the importance of faithful obedience & sound teaching is on full display. What are ways we can encourage one another as a community group to be faithful to obey & sound in our understanding of Scripture?

7. Pastor Nate posed this question towards the end of the message: “Why do Christians struggle to faithfully obey the Word of God?” He looked at Matthew 5:17-19 to see how obedience to God is connected to trust in God & His Word. So what has encouraged you to trust God & His Word so that you want to pursue obedience?

8. We ended with a call to trust the Bible because Jesus trusted the Bible. What are the ways that trusting in the trustworthiness of the Bible can be good for the soul during these unusual days?
