Exodus 11:1-10

  1. How does Exodus 11 demonstrate the absolute sovereignty of God over Pharaoh and Egypt?
  2. Why is it significant that the Lord Himself declares He will bring one more plague upon Egypt (v.1)? How does this reinforce God’s initiative and authority in salvation?
  3. How does the final plague—the death of the firstborn—serve as both judgment and deliverance? How does this foreshadow the gospel?
  4. What does verse 3 tell us about God’s providence in causing the Egyptians to view the Israelites favorably? How does this show God’s ability to turn hearts according to His purposes?
  5. Why does God make a distinction between Egypt and Israel in this plague (v.7)? How does this relate to the doctrine of election?
  6. How should we understand Moses’ anger toward Pharaoh (v.8) in light of God’s judgment? Is there a righteous place for indignation when God’s justice is rejected?
  7. What does the certainty of the plague (v.1, “He will let you go… indeed, he will drive you away”) tell us about God’s promises? How can we trust God even when deliverance is delayed?
  8. In what ways does the death of Egypt’s firstborn prepare us to understand the necessity of the death of God’s Firstborn—Jesus Christ? (Note: On Jesus as the firstborn, this does not mean He was created, but speaks to His position as first.)
  9. In speaking of God's sovereignty, in what areas of life do you need to start trusting the Lord more?
