Exodus 20:15

1. When you hear the command, “You shall not steal,” what is the first thing that comes to mind? Before hearing this sermon, did you tend to think of it only as taking someone else’s possessions?

2. Why does this command only make sense if God owns everything? How do passages like Psalm 24:1 and Colossians 1:16 deepen your understanding of the Eighth Commandment?

3. It was emphasized that stealing ultimately says, “I know better than God.” In what ways can that attitude appear even when someone never commits theft in the traditional sense?

4. Read Mark 7:21–23. Jesus says theft comes from the heart. How does this challenge the idea that stealing is merely an outward action?

5. Several modern forms of stealing were mentioned: dishonesty at work, plagiarism, taking undeserved credit, laziness, and exploiting others. Which of these do you think our culture tends to minimize or excuse? Why?

6. How are coveting, discontentment, and stealing connected? Have you ever seen dissatisfaction with what God has given lead toward sinful attitudes or actions?

7. It was emphasized that the Law exposes our sin before it points us to Christ. Why is it important to see both our guilt and God’s holiness before we fully appreciate the gospel?

8. Read 2 Corinthians 8:9 and Galatians 3:13. What stands out to you about Christ’s willingness to become poor and bear the curse of the Law for sinners?

9. It was said, “We are great sinners, but Christ is a great Savior.” How does that truth encourage you when you become aware of your own sin?

10. Read Ephesians 4:28. Paul doesn’t simply say, “Stop stealing.” What positive commands replace stealing? Why is honest work connected to generosity?

11. The sermon identified three gospel-shaped responses to possessions: Receive thankfully, work honestly, give generously. Which of these is easiest for you? Which is most challenging? Why?

12. How would our homes, workplaces, and churches look different if we consistently practiced contentment, integrity, and joyful generosity?

13. What is one practical way you can display gospel-shaped generosity this week to your family, church, neighbor, or someone in need?
