Matthew 7:1-6

1) Some use Matthew was 7:1 as a defense for their behavior. They say that Jesus forbids judging in all forms and at all times.

A) If Jesus did forbid all judging at all times what would the world look like?

B) Instead, Jesus forbids judging that flows from self-righteousness. What does this kind of self-righteous judgment look like?

C) In what situations do we need to practice judgment?

2) We are called to show discernment but not to condemn others for two reasons. We are not the ultimate judge, and we are far more sinful than we think.

A) Matthew 7:2 makes clear that God will judge everyone. Why does this universal judgment help us to not judge and condemn others?

B) Why should our own sinfulness keep us from judging others?

C) One reason we judge others is to feel better about ourselves. Instead of judging, where should we find comfort?

3) It is a good thing to help others get the speck out of their own eye. But first we must get the log out of ours Matthew 7:5.

A) In the final analysis, the only way we can remove sin is by God’s power. How are you doing on removing sin in your life and trying to live righteously?

B) How can you/we better remove sin from our lives? What is your strategy?

C) How can we better help those we care about fight sin?

4) Pastor Matt said we need to hold truth and compassion tightly. We need to practice discernment and judge what is good and evil, but we must also be kind and compassionate. All of this requires a conviction that the gospel is true and it is the only remedy to sin and evil.

A) When does a person look like when they hold both truth and compassion tightly?

B) Do you look like that person?

C) How can we engage the lost with truth and compassion?

D) Are you fully convinced that the gospel is the only remedy for evil, sin, sorrow, and hopelessness?
