Exodus 20:16

1. We heard that truth is rooted in God's own character rather than merely being a good moral principle. How does understanding God as "the God of truth" change the way we think about honesty in everyday life?

2. It was mentioned that slander, gossip, half-truths, deception, exaggeration, flattery, and sharing information carelessly are ways in which we can bear false witness. Which of these do you think Christians are most tempted to overlook or excuse? Why?

3. Look at Matthew 12:34-35. Why is it important to recognize that sinful speech is ultimately a heart issue rather than merely a communication problem? How does that change the solution to the problem of false speech?

4. A few diagnostic questions were posed to consider before speaking.

-Do I know the facts?

-Are my motives right?

-Would I say the same thing if the person were present?

-Do my words demonstrate God’s wisdom & care?

Which of these questions would most help you before speaking, and why?

5. We also heard that lying affects real people. How have you seen gossip, false accusations, exaggeration, or careless words damage relationships, families, churches, or reputations? Why do we sometimes underestimate the power of our words?

6. We talked about how we are to be transformed in our speech as we embrace the gospel. According to Ephesians 4:15 and 4:25, what does it look like to "speak the truth in love"? Why is it difficult to hold truth and love together?

7. In talking about holding truth and love together, it was said: “Love without truth is shallow, while truth without love is cruel.” Which side do you personally tend to struggle with more: avoiding difficult truths in the name of love or speaking truth without sufficient love? How can the gospel help bring greater balance?

8. Think about your life and all the different aspects of relationships and opportunities for speech: marriage, family, workplace, friendships, church, or online interactions. What is an area of life where truthful speech is especially important to you right now? How would faithful obedience to the Ninth Commandment look in that area this week?

9. Where do you most need God's grace to grow in truthful speech? How can this group pray for you and encourage you to become someone who reflects the character of the God of truth?
