Exodus 5

1. Read Exodus 5.

2. In his arrogance, Pharoah rejected Yahweh’s demand of him, “Let my people go.” Eventually, Pharoah’s arrogance led to great suffering for him, his family, and those he governed.  Give an example of your arrogance leading to suffering for you, your family, and others around you.

3. Pharoah treated the Israelites harshly by imposing an unreasonable demand on them. Describe a time in which you treated others harshly and imposed an unreasonable demand on them. 

4. What were the results of you treating others harshly and imposing an unreasonable demand on them? 

5. Why does humanity have the tendency to treat others harshly and impose unreasonable demands on them?

6. The foremen of Israel doubted God’s sovereignty, dismissed God’s promises, and as a result, they identified themselves as the servants of Pharoah rather than the servants of God because of their difficult circumstances. Recall a difficult circumstance that caused you to question the sovereignty of God, the promises of God, and your identity as a servant of God.

7. Moses and Aaron were obedient to God’s instructions, and yet the foremen of the people of Israel maliciously blamed them for the difficult circumstances they were facing. When has obedience to God’s Word led to you being maligned by others?

8. Why is it worth following Christ even though we are guaranteed suffering for following Christ while on the earth?

9. Moses was deeply discouraged by the attack he faced from the foremen of the people of Israel. In fact, it caused him to doubt the character and promises of God, but despite his doubt concerning God’s character and promises, He demonstrated faith in God by turning to Him in prayer.  When you don’t turn to God in the midst of difficulty, who or what do you turn to and why?

10. Why is it wise, good, and right to turn to God and depend on Him, especially in the midst of discouragement?

11. What helps lead you or remind you to turn to Yahweh in the midst of troubling circumstances?
