Pastor Nate Wright

Luke 23:26-31

Pastor Nate reminded us that we've seen Jesus be unlawfully arrested, illegally tried, unjustly condemned, brutally beaten and now he is, in this passage, on the verge on being cruelly executed.

1.  Reviewing Luke 23:26:

  • Who led Jesus away (Mark 15:16)?
  • From where had the Romans soldiers taken Jesus (Matthew 27:27-31)?
  • To where would they lead Jesus (Luke 23:32-33)?

2.  Why did the Romans never walk a straight line to a crucifixion and why were the Roman crucifixions usually in an elevated space?

3.  Who carried Jesus' cross for him?  Why is this event significant for Simon of Cyrene (Romans 16:13)?  Pastor Nate commented that this event "demonstrated that God works in strange and mysterious ways."  How have you seen that truth bear out in your own life lately?

4.  Verse 27:  "Lamentation is a virtue rarely practiced in the American church today." Considering passages such as Jeremiah 9:20 or Ps. 119:136 or the book of Lamentations, "It is right and good for believers to mourn over:

  • unbelief
  • murder in the womb
  • sexual perversion
  • loss of life in war

and to cry out to the Lord on behalf of:

  • false teaching that captivates the hearts of millions of people
  • orphans and widows
  • physical, mental, emotional and relational suffering
  • those who are oppressed
  • the suffering and sin that saturates our world."

What pricks your heart concerning one or two of these issues?  Share how you regularly include these issues, or would like to, in your prayer life.  When and how often do you join other Christians to pray for any of these issues? See below for some times and days of group prayer options.

5.  Verse 28. Why did Jesus issue a warning?  What was the warning?

6.  What do you think about this statement: "If we weep over the cross, it should be with sorrow over our sin and gratitude for our salvation but not with sadness for Jesus."?  Does this change your thought-life, prayer-life, how you approach looking forward to Resurrection Sunday this week?

7. Verse 29-31.  What is the analogy Jesus gives?

8.  The Four Points:

  • Jesus believes in the wrath of God and is not ashamed or embarrassed of the fire of hell and eternal damnation.  How can you share these truths during a Gospel conversation?
  • Jesus, battered, beaten and bloody, warned others about the coming judgement of God. "It is Christ like to humbly warn others about the wrath of God."  Are you avoiding it like our society or addressing it like our Savior?
  • Jesus doesn't need our sympathy.  "Are you striving to conceal, satisfy or kill sin?" Look at Romans 8:12-14 and Colossians 3:5-8.
  • Yahweh rescues those who trust in Him from His wrath. Do you believe what the Son has made clear, that the judgement of God is coming?  What practical difference does that make in your day to day life?
